In the previous two seasons of Kiddos in the Kitchen, we've talked a lot about why it's important to bring kids into the kitchen. This season we’re focusing more on the how.

Season 3, Episode 0: What’s in Store for Season 3

Conner: (00:00)
Welcome to Kiddos in the Kitchen, a podcast hosted by my mom.

Stephanie Conner: (00:18)
One of the joys of parenthood is seeing your child evolve into an independent person. It can be bittersweet, of course, when your child no longer needs you to tie his shoes, or do her hair, or pack his lunch. But that is the ultimate goal of parenting, isn't it? To help your child grow into a responsible, independent adult. We have lots to teach the kids in our lives, and we're all doing our best. If you've listened to this podcast, then you know that for me, it's important that my son understands how to nourish himself. And that includes being comfortable in the kitchen.

Stephanie Conner: (01:01)
Welcome to Kiddos in the Kitchen, a podcast about helping busy adults find the inspiration and information they need to teach the kids in their lives how to cook. I'm your host, Stephanie Conner, and today I'm excited to give you a sneak peek of Season 3.

Stephanie Conner: (01:26)
In the previous two seasons of Kiddos in the Kitchen, we've talked a lot about why it's important to bring kids into the kitchen. We've talked about mindset, about health and nutrition, strategies for eating more veggies, and how to have more pleasant family mealtimes, and everyone's favorite topic, picky eaters. What we haven't done enough, though, is talk about how to actually work in the kitchen. What do kids really need to know? What do you need to know if you're actually going to teach them something? We parents and kids have questions, things like...

Conner: (02:07)
"How can I make vegetables taste better?"

Stephanie Conner: (02:11)
"How long are leftovers good for?"

Conner: (02:14)
"Can I eat raw cookie dough?"

Stephanie Conner: (02:17)
"What is blanching?"

Conner: (02:19)
"What's the difference between a crumble and a crisp?"

Stephanie Conner: (02:24)
"How do I make holiday baking special?"

Conner: (02:28)
"Seriously, can I eat raw cookie dough?"

Stephanie Conner: (02:31)
So this season we’ll be guided by culinary experts like Debbie McGiffin, who teaches kids’ cooking classes in Florida.

Debbie McGiffin: (02:45)
I think the most important part is to let them do; they’ll watch to learn it, but then hand it over. They may not do it perfectly, but you know what? That's okay. That's what they're there for, it's to learn.

Stephanie Conner: (03:01)
Then there's food safety expert and microbiologist Lisa Yakas.

Lisa Yakas: (03:09)
So it's really just making sure you have separate cutting boards for different purposes. Don't introduce cross-contamination, and again, wash your hands again after you've touched raw meat. You don't want to spread that germy juice all around the kitchen.

Stephanie Conner: (03:28)
And as we approach the holidays, we'll hear from the seaside baker, Jackie Bruchez.

Jackie Bruchez: (03:36)
I come from a very large Italian family. My grandfather would let me skip a week of school, and we would bake hundreds and hundreds of pounds of Italian cookies. And then we'd assemble it on a plate and give them to everybody. So I want to recreate that with my kids.

Stephanie Conner: (03:57)
Throughout Season 3, as we strive to learn more kitchen skills, terms, and strategies, we'll naturally hear from a lot of professional chefs, but I'll be talking to some kid chefs too. We want to understand what kids like about being in the kitchen and how they learn best, so I'll ask them. I am very excited to share this season with you because together, we'll learn, and get inspired, and gain the confidence we need to teach the kids in our lives how to cook.

Stephanie Conner: (04:31)
